Amorphous Geometry

چکیده
Amorphous computing is a recently introduced paradigm that favours geometrical configurations. The physical layout of an amorphous computer is based on a possibly irregular and error-prone planar distribution of a large number of simple processing components; this is well-suited for handling spatial structures. It has come to our attention that the well-known and long-since established discipline of computational geometry could benefit from the amorphous computing approach. In this spirit we speculate on the use of having smart surfaces interact with their environment or with autonomous entities such as robots. It seemed natural to refer to this approach by the notion of amorphous geometry. Although at this stage our exploration of this concept is fairly modest, we feel that our experiments are sufficiently convincing and merit further study. Exploring the possibilities of amorphous geometry should show that amorphous computing can deal with various classes of problems from computational geometry and may eventually expand the field considerably while providing a basis for useful applications.

Static correlations functions and domain walls in glass-forming liquids: the case of a sandwich geometry.
The problem of measuring nontrivial static correlations in deeply supercooled liquids made recently some progress thanks to the introduction of amorphous boundary conditions, in which a set of free particles is subject to the effect of a different set of particles frozen into their (low temperature) equilibrium positions. In this way, one can study the crossover from nonergodic to ergodic phase...
متن کاملDefinition and properties of ideal amorphous solids.
It is proposed that two ideal amorphous structures, type I and type II, based on maximally random jammed packing of spheres of equal size, form a distinct class of ideal amorphous solids. The ideal amorphous structures contain wide variations in local density, limited by the condition of solidity. Four distinct characteristics, based on statistical geometry and topology, are shown to define thi...
متن کاملOn quasi-amorphous sets
A set is said to be amorphous if it is innnite, but cannot be written as the disjoint union of two innnite sets. The possible structures which an amorphous set can carry were discussed in 5]. Here we study an analogous notion at the next level up, that is to say replacing nite/innnite by countable/uncountable, saying that a set is quasi-amorphous if it is uncountable, but is not the disjoint un...
متن کاملGeneration of correlated photons in hydrogenated amorphous-silicon waveguides.
We report the first (to our knowledge) observation of correlated photon emission in hydrogenated amorphous-silicon waveguides. We compare this to photon generation in crystalline silicon waveguides with the same geometry. In particular, we show that amorphous silicon has a higher nonlinearity and competes with crystalline silicon in spite of higher loss.

We present a new method to measure the difuse scattering of amorphous multilayers. In contrast to conventional scans, that all take place in the plane of reflection, in this out-of-plane scattering geometry the accessible range in parallel momentum transfer Qi is not limited by the sample surface. We can therefore record data continuously from
